Commissioned by Ailey II
(formerly the Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble)
Premiered March 31 - April 2, 2000. Aaron Davis Hall, New York, NY.
Choreographed by Robert Battle.
I originally composed this in 1996 as a recital piece for a percussionist named Damien Bassman. It was my first (and last) attempt at composing fully-notated jazz. That's half true... the entire piano part is notated, but the drum set part is not. In fact, Damien and I worked together to create the drum part, with Damien having free reign in the first and last movements, and considerably less freedom in the middle two. Robert Battle choreographed the score in 1999 on commission from the Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble.
In the Summer of 2001, Gerald Casel choreographed the same score. His work, "Make Way For Dragons," received its premiere at Martha's Vineyard in September, 2001.
